SoundCloud Selections #1

Time to start off a new(ish) feature, where I'm going to post up my favourite tracks from using SoundCloud.

These are tracks that I've posted on our Facebook/Twitter, but have not had the time to make an individual post for them on the blog. There's an awesome community within SoundCloud, so this is a great way to share my favourites.

I've tried to do this before, with the 'Random Selections' little feature, but I never kept it up. Before I tried to keep it to one large post a month and now I'm just going to post up whenever I can. Much easier.

These are tracks that I've listened to because I follow the artists, been sent by others or have just stumbled on them using SoundCloud.

The tracks are embedded below, with a few comments on each. Enjoy...

Bondax are fantastic. Not sure how many times I will say this. This is a track that I didn't manage to feature already, but have been streaming from their soundcloud since it was uploaded.

They really know how to manipulate and use samples to great effect.

Love the way that this one progresses, adding layers that make the track interesting. There's always something going on in each section, from the drum programming to the baselines and the top line melodies. This is the type of music that doesn't get boring to me and always has my brain ticking when listening.

Fantastic track from Mukes.

Dark Sky starts this one off dark, add pace and then run with it. Instantly pressed all the right buttons with me. All about the baselines with this one.

This remix unites two of my favourite producers around at the moment. Great take on the original by Kidnap Kid, which is an absolutely beaut of a track.

Another example of how great Kidnap Kid is.

The sample usage, by Paleman, in this track is unbelievably good. It wasn't till I heard this in a mix and then another mix and then another mix, that I realise how much damage this track does.

Stumbled on this after hearing another remix by Kid Smpl and was completely taken away by this. Exactly the polar-opposite to any other We Found Love remix that around on the net and that's saying something, because there's hundreds.

This takes you away and it's like it's been produced in a dream. The remix tries to strip the original and excellently uses the vocal as a melody, which is a guilty pleasure of mine. So good.

Available as free download from Kid Smpl's SoundCloud.

Top notch production and warm synths brought together by Kozee for a completely addictive funky track. Found myself coming back to this now and again, as I couldn't get the groove out of my head.

Available to purchase from BandCamp.

Plan B - Ill Manors

New Plan B, taken from his 3rd album of the same name 'Ill Manors'.

Have been very intrigued to hear this. Don't expect to be singing this at any festivals soon.

This is raw.

Joker - Lost [Video] feat. Buggsy & Otis Brown

New video for the latest single taken from Joker's album from last year.

Solid production and with a polished video. One of the best cuts from the album.

'Lost' features on Joker's debut album 'The Vision' out now, released by 4AD.

Pikcha - Echoes EP - Forthcoming Slime Recordings

Nice production and plenty of garage vibes from Pikcha.

Particularly liking stand out 'In Echoes', where there's a great bouncing baseline alongside flickering delayed-synths and atmospheric pads.

It's hard not to give in to the rhythm of the track.

Pikcha's 'Echoes' EP is scheduled for a spring 2012 release on Slime Recordings.

Below is another Pikcha production, given away as a free download...

Rudimental - Spoons feat. MNEK and Syron [Video]

In love with this song so much.

Already shared it twice on the DPM Facebook without even knowing there was a video knocking about. Can't recommend this highly enough. This track has probably been my most played for the last week.

Everything about this is just excellent from the vocal takes to the minimal house production to the hypnotic sampling of some spoons. Yes, that's why it's called spoons if you hadn't already figured it out.

Available for a limited time on a free download. Get it before it's gone!

Wiley - Evolve Or Be Extinct [Video]

Cool video of possibly my favourite cut from Wiley's album of the same title.

A little bit surprised no one has really done anything like this idea before. Someone probably has and I just haven't seen it probably.

Anyway the track is what Wiley does best. Upbeat riddim and straight spitting. The visual do well to move with the pace of the track. Wiley has made cool videos in the past, but the ones for this album and for Big Dada have been completely different. Maybe because he has actually been in them.

Discarda - Rhyme On [Remixes]

Along with the single and remixes came the acapella with the release of Discarda's 'Rhyme On'.

A remix competition was soon announced with the winning four mixes receive an official remix on Adamantium Music. Listen to the above enteries uploaded onto Soundcloud earlier today and the remixes with the most votes will win.

Vote for your favourite remix by sending the remix you like, for example 'BeatGeeks' to RhymeOn@AdamantiumMusic.com.

Recommended: BeatGeeks, Kidda Beats, SNK, Mooney, HK, Juzlo & Mr Mitch.

Voting closes March 5th and four winners will be announced on March 9th.

Below is the original Discarda 'Rhyme On' over Preditah's 'Nosey Parker'...

Bondax - Just Us + Enter/You're So

Bondax just released a free track titled 'Just Us', via Boiler Room.

Along with this comes the news of a single release coming on Super of 'Your So' and 'Enter'.

Been following these guys for a few months now and their productions are top notch. Knew that someone would pick them up and am not surprised in the slightest that the excellent Super have done so.

March 12th is the apparent release date for the single and Bondax will be giving away some free music in the lead up.

*Update. Literally just found the clip streams on Soundcloud of the Bondax single release.

Tanka - Boogie With Me

Some new heat from Winchester's Tanka.

Serious deep bass heavy business. I've had this on repeat ever since it was uploaded. Can't get enough of the baseline and the pitched vocal sample. Works so well.

This is just one of many bass music gems that have been popping up on Tanka's SoundCloud over the last few months. Don't sleep.

Kidnap Kid - Alphaville EP

New EP from a recent discovery of mine, Kidnap Kid.

This guy has got some talent when constructing tracks. His beats are insanely addictive and mixed together with perfectly implemented vocal samples. 'Lazarus Taxon' would be the stand out cut for me, although 'Vehl' isn't that far behind is terms of quality.

One impressive EP.

Kidnap Kid's 'Alphaville' EP is released 5th March on the increasingly good Black Butter Records.

Below is the excellent remix of Disclosure's 'Tenderly', which I've been rinsing from SoundCloud since it's upload. To go with that I've also embedded my favourite Kidnap Kid tracks 'Shouldn't Be Alone' and 'No One Else' from his previous two EP releases. Just in case you needed more introduction to this guy.

Enjoy...

Jessie Ware - Running [Disclosure Remix]

My word, these Disclosure boys have done it again.

ANOTHER fantastic remix.

To be honest, I could tell that this would be great before hitting the play button. One of the best emerging talents crossed with the stunning Jessie Ware wasn't going to be something likely to fail.

This more than lives up to expectations.

'Running' is out March 26th, released by PMR Records.

Below is the elegant video for Jessie's silky 'Running', which is co-produced by Julio Bashmore...

SBTRKT - Hold On [Sisi Bakbak Remix]

This is a lot different to all the other remixes that I've heard of this song, which is quite a feat because there are tonnes of them.

Bit of a slow burner, but once it progresses and the beat gets steadier, it's great. I like the way that it has taken the original and Sisi Bakbak have completely remoulded it.

The 'Hold On' single released by Young Turks is out Monday.

Below is the downloadable live version that was recorded for Radio 1. Enjoy...

Duskdown - Here With Me [Corporal F & Hiloxam Remix]

Quick friday post due to an excellent Corporal F and Hiloxam remix.

This one pushes all of my buttons. Splendid build-ups and vibes all round on this one.

Release info to come soon.

Byron - Don't Judge A Book [Video]

"Byron is formerly an English teacher with a passion for lyrics and storytelling fuelled by his desire to say something about his suburban surroundings in a very raw, yet eloquent way.

From middle-England Slough, this is a place that infiltrates everything Byron does and everything he says. His frustration at his surroundings and the things he sees culminate in intelligent and informed stories with an articulate delivery and razor-sharp wit."

Instantly took a liking to this one.

Byron does well to paint a picture and tell a compelling story with ease over a dark, almost gloomy knocking beat.

Nice to hear something with a lot of substance instead of plain old hype. This held my attention throughout. I'm not completely sold on the Mike Skinner comparisons to Byron, but I can see where some would come to that.

Anyway, this is worth your attention.

'Don't Judge A Book' is featured on Byron's 'Deep Lyrics, Dirty Beats' EP, which you can grab for free below...

IA Records - Make It Happen EP [Out Now]

"The EP is a showcase of the various genres and artists we will be working with, with many of the artists on the release already penciled in for their own EP later in the year. Both Luthor and Hedley King contribute dub techno tracks, with Plezier and Pikcha throwing down some garage and funky inspired fire and KJs opting for an electro / global bass track."

Our friends over at electronic music blog Immersed Audio have today released their first EP, making the transition from blog to record label.

This EP boasts a great mix of tracks from a range of talented electronic producers. The opener from Luthor is currently getting a heavy rotation on my speakers and I'm liking the jittery pace of Plezier's 'Baby'.

An EP worth your attention.

You can grab this now over on the IA BandCamp page now for a lowered price before it hits all other major digital stores.

To celebrate the release IA have given a free download away, which has also been featured over on xlr8r. Love when this one flips into the Redman verse...

Rinse Presents: Royal-T - Inside The Ride / Cool Down

The 1st in a series of 12" releases from Rinse, which is to be followed by a Royal-T album also on Rinse I believe.

This is absolutely huge from Royal-T. I've never been so happy to receive a promo in my inbox. The energy in both tracks is incredibly full on and in your face, which is exactly why I love grime so much. You may remember 'Cool Down' from the Boy Better Know Tropical 2 album, but this has been beefed up and extended. The second drop where the 'ooh' vocal comes in gets me epically hyped.

Simply sound system destroying.

Pre-order: Rinse Presents: Royal-T - Inside The Ride / Cool Down

If you missed it you can read my interview with Royal-T here.

Ifan Dafydd - Treehouse [Video]

Just great. The visuals actually make me love this song more.

Released by Push & Run, you can grab this on iTunes now. Highly recommended.

Raziek - Steppin Up [Jaycek Remix]

JayceK comes through with another spot on production, this time remixing Raziek's 'Steppin Up'.

Love this version of the track, JayceK really has developed his own sound.

Productions filled with warm synths and are always super slick.

Here are a couple of my favourite JayceK tracks for you to enjoy below...

I have to admit I hadn't heard the original to this, before I'd heard this JayceK remix. Although, I suppose that's one of the main points to a remix.

Below I've embedded the original Raziek 'Steppin Up' track...

Jay-Z & Kanye West - Ni**as In Paris [Video]

Don't care what anyone says, this is the best cut from Watch The Throne.

This was without a doubt in my top 5 tracks of last year. This beat bangs! Loving the nice little touches added to the original in the video.

Amazing visuals filmed at the Staples Centre in LA and is directed by Kanye.

So ahead of the game.

iAm1 - Lie Low

"iAm1 is the sum of 2 people, singer song writer Oli Rose and MC Jamie Wallace. The two met whilst studying music at Westminster University in 2008 when iAm1 was born.

From diverse backgrounds and influences they merge Oli’s traditional song writing roots with Jamie’s original flows and self inflicting lyrics, bursting on to the London scene in 2008 with a set firmly rooted in acoustic/spoken-word, as comfortable in a folk setting as they were with a grime audience."

Something a bit different for this blog, a folk/hip hop duo called iAm1... I know it doesn't sounds like it should work too well, but this is an exception.

Maybe not a completely new idea, but this sounds really fresh. Each element of this track, although minimal, works together really well.

Their debut EP 'Watching' is officially released on March 19th, although you can grab it from iTunes already.

Champion feat. Princess Nyah - Crazy + [Terror Danjah and D.O.K Remix]

'Once again UK Funky wunderkind Champion serves up another sultry vocal cut - this time enlisting the services of songstress Princess Nyah. ‘Crazy’ begins with a cluster of bongo drums and and colourful funk synths that escalate into a flurry of bassline stabs and groove-laden percussion.

On the flipside Hardrive head honcho Terror Danjah teams up with D.O.K for a haunted re-rub that still retains the danceable element of the original, but comes with the signature Terror Danjah cackle and gremlins soundbytes. The pair do their best to increase the tracks intensity with 16-bar beat pattern switch ups and haunting chords throughout which gives the track a unexpected but welcomed Grime makeover.'

Champion does it again.

Hot off the heels of 'Sensitinvity' with Ruby Lee Ryder, Champion serves up the follow up which continues along the same formula.

Funky rhythms and deep baselines that are made for the club, along with a seductive vocal from Princess Nyah.

On remix duties, Terror Danjah and D.O.K. build on the track injecting some grimey goodness while still keeping the dance element to the track.

Released 5th March on Formula Records.

Teddy Music - Grime: The Compilation [Out Now]

'Teddy Music (formerly known as Silencer) should be one of the producers you're familiar with if you've been paying attention to the UK's grime scene over the last few years, as his uncompromising sound palette of sinister synths and menacing drum patterns have been a staple on a variety of artist's albums and DJ sets.

Grime: The Compilation features an all-star cast of Grime's elite that includes Skepta, JME, Newham Generals, P Money, Tinchy Stryder, Ghetts, Scrufizzer and Kozzie.

One of the four exclusive tracks on the compilation features Dirtee Stanks' Newham Generals on the aptly titled Doomed, where they trade verses over a militant production where squelching bassline stabs create an unorthodox melody. Other new material comes in the shape of Tempa T's Spray Dem, which is a brutal exercise in lyrical warfare which we've come to know and love from the Slew Dem member over the years."

Bit slow on this, meant to have posted his at start of last week...

If you've listened to a grime album or mixtape over the past couple of years, you would have no doubt heard the name 'tedddyyy' ringing in your ears. Most notably on JME's Blam album.

Teddy music has put in the work over the last few years and this compilation is testament to that. This literally features everyone that's doing there thing in the grime scene at the moment, a list that you can't help but be impressed with.

Epic beats and bars. An essential grime release.
