M.I.A. - Bad Girls

New single from one of my favourite artists ever!

Sounding good, produced by Danja. You can hear the Timbaland influence on the track.

Apparently this will be avilible tomorrow and the video is set to drop on Friday, 3rd February.

Maya's 4th LP is scheduled for a summer release on XL.

Look out for her forthcoming M.I.A. apparence on Madonna's newest single alongside Nicki Minaj.

The 2 Bears - Be Strong [Album Stream] + Work [St Etienne Remix]

"January 2012 sees the release of the debut The 2 Bears album Be Strong. A London record through and through, it ducks and weaves to the myriad sounds of the city, as The 2 Bears Raf Daddy and Joe Goddard pursue the perfect party record.

Alongside tracks like Be Strong, Church and the mighty Bear Hug – a pummeling treatise on the benefits of the peak time dancefloor cuddle – Raf and Joe mutate genres into previously unheard territories of dancehall country on the bouncing prison yard lament Time In Mind and garage reggae on Heart Of the Congos, a track that manages to simultaneously channel both Wookie and early ‘80s Madness before placing them each at a system in the heart of Notting Hill Carnival at dusk."

This is a great album.

I love everything about the 2 Bears, they just encapsulate fun dance music.

It would be hard not to like them.

Download: The 2 Bears - Be Strong

Essential Listening: Be Strong, Bear Hug, Work, Take A Look Around, Ghosts & Zombies.

To celebrate the release of 'Be Strong' the Bears are giving away the St Etienne remix of latest single 'Work'. Another prime remix..

DPM Interview: Royal-T

It's hard to point out anyone in the grime scene that had a better year than Royal-T. From the 'Orangeade' EP, to touring overseas, major single remix releases and being an essential clog in the Butterz label.

I was able to get some questions over to Royal-T, were he looked at his highlights of the previous 12 months, gave a few insights to his next movements and spoke about how things have changed for producers within grime.

*Click the play button at the bottom right to listen to all the embedded tracks whilst you read.

DPM: 2011 was an incredible year for you, as pointed out by your Yearbook mix. What would you pick out as being the biggest highlight for you?

Royal-T: Thanks. The Butterz Party was definitely a big highlight for me and going abroad to dj for the first time. Also remixing charting singles was a big moment for me, but touring Australia was a huge highlight for me personally.

Even though it's 'business as usual' and what I’d always been aiming to be able to do with music, I still have to pinch myself when things like this happen. I'd never left Europe before that trip either.

Something that sticks in my mind was that you had a track featured in a FACT mix by Mike Skinner. That must have been incredible right?

Yeah even that is a big highlight for me too. I used to worship The Streets album and I still listen to them to this day, so that was cool.

Regardless of him knowing 'Royal-T', just for the fact he recognised and enjoyed the track to be able to play it is enough. I'd say some of my production is influenced by his work anyway.

Touring Australia, what was it like to be taking Grime to another continent like that?

Yeah it was heavy. It just makes me glad that I’m on the right track to be honest. Compared to other guys in the game I haven't been about very long, so I had to represent.

What were the Australian grime crowds like? Are they much different from over here?

They're very into Dubstep and that and I was playing alongside Dubstep acts so it was fun to bring some 2-step/Grime and shock people a bit. I wanted the Dubstep heads to understand and recognise the sound and give them a different outlook on 140.

They're just as passionate about music over there as people are here so I felt quite at home anyway.

You’re going to be at Cable for the Butterz 2nd Birthday party. What's the one track that you just can't wait to play?

I've got this track I’ve made for my next project. I’ve been waiting to play for ages. An 8 bar tune, it's completely different to anything I’ve made before. Everyone's been trying to make Spartan 2.0, so I always try to come with a different vibe.

Be good to see people's reactions about this one, its nuts.

For anyone that hasn't been to a Butterz rave, can you try to sum up the vibe and what goes down?

It's hard to sum up without actually experiencing it for yourself. The 2nd birthday will be enough to prove what we do. Everyone's very serious about what they/we do here but that doesn't stop the enjoyment.

Instrumental grime seems to be in a strong position at the moment. What would you suggest as the fundamental reason(s) for this?

I think with the rise of Dubstep mobbing clubs, Grime needed to look strong again. I think a lot of producers were fed up of being pushed aside for the MCs to flourish, so some of us took a stand.

Butterz had a big influence on things. They built a platform for the instrumental side to shine. For years it was that same old cycle. MCs ask for beats, don't pay, get played on Logan, get put on a dead mixtape, no one buys and then that's the end of it.
Something had to change eventually.

Can the momentum continue?

Yeah, definitely. As long as us producers don't slack. I ain't going anywhere anyway.

You've mostly released EP's of material so far. Will we be able to see a Royal-T album this year? Any details/titles you could give us?

Maybe. I'm being a bit secretive with my next move but it's all in order and believe me it's big.

The Yearbook mix also highlighted the remix work that you've put in. Does the remix work affect your original output & how do you try and balance the two?

To be honest it did in a way, but only for the better. I was able to relax this year and not feel pressured into making 20 beats a week. I just chilled and never forced myself to be creative. I have strange work habits as it is, so it was quite fun to be able to do all the remixes and work with songs from other genres.

There is a cool trend of producers collaborating with each other at the moment. Are there any that you would love to get in the studio with or have been in with?

Yeah I’ve got project files sorted with 3 or 4 producers at the moment, so we'll see what happens. I would like to work on a 2-step track with Mike Skinner one day.

It would be good to see if I could do a tune with Skream. That would be a bit nuts.

Sharing is caring. Are there any producers/artists at are currently 'under the radar' that you would recommend checking out?

A guy called OH91 from Bristo. He's heavy. Mister Maff who remixed Orangeade is good too. There are a few others too, I’m sure there's more that I can't think of at the moment.

What's the one thing that you would like to have achieved by the end of the year?

Maybe play a couple festivals this year. More or less everything I did last year but x 10.

I'm just looking to take the piss again.

Royal-T is playing at Butterz & Hardrive present: Butterz 2nd Birthday at Cable on the 24th March, along with JME, Terror Danjah, Elijah & Skilliam and Swindle.

Swindle - Ignition [Video] feat. Footsie & Nadia Suliman

This is my first essential track of the year, absolutely love this.

I've said countless times that I'm a huge fan of Swindle's. More artists need to be getting on his tracks, I simple can't stress this enough.

To be honest, I wasn't expecting a video and I'm pleasantly surprised that it got one with great visual that compliment the single. There are also too many cameo's to mention without missing a few!

Download: Swindle - Ignition feat. Footsie & Nadia Suliman

The single also comes with two more tracks, the Stinkahbell featured 'Out of the Blue' and 'Ringworm'.

All three of these tracks are going to be in my playlist for a long time...

Enigma Dubz - Hard To Smile EP

OK, I'm late on this. This is especially shameful because I got the promo email from their label.

Anyway, this was released on 16th January via Four40 Records.

It's full of dark garage beats, that will seduce you into boping your head relentlessly, mixed with various vocal samples and solid baselines.

These are the type of tracks that you can press play and drift off into them.

Pusherman - Shake It Off

I can't even remember if I blogged this before, but I've been waiting a long time for this to get the release it deserves.

An absolute hammer of a tune. The snare hits like a punch to the face and the bass will resonate through your body.

Huge support from the likes of Jackmaster also, saying it was "The track I wish I'd signed to my label".

DPM Compilation [Free Download / Stream]

Digital Pirate Material, compilation free download.

A collection of tracks made by talented artists that I've discovered over the past year, whilst writing the Digital Pirate Material music blog. Totalling 18 tracks strong, each sampling a different artist, from a wide and eclectic blend of underground music genres.

Brought together as a way of pushing out a multitude of sounds from a line up of accomplished artists, we hope that you enjoy this collection as much as we did compiling it.

DPM Interview: Youngman

Youngman has been generating a lot of attention recently with his forthcoming single 'Who Knows?', with features coming in the Guardian's 'New Band of the Day' column and being listed in the Daily Mirror's one to watch list for 2012.

I managed to get a few questions across to Youngman, where I asked about how 'Who Knows?' came to be, what it's like to be signed to Shy FX's label and recent artist comparisims made in the press.

DPM: Skream produced Who Knows, how did the track come about? Did he send you the beat or did you work together in the studio?

Youngman: We didn’t actually get in the studio together as such. The story behind the record was we were at Rinse FM, eating Nandos, it was 40 degrees in the height of summer and the air con was broken and he played this record, and Benga and I looked at each other, and I said on air, ‘Skream, I’ll vocal this track and I’ll bring it back next week and play it for you guys.’ I wrote it the next day, sent it over to him, he loved it and it’s kind of gone from there.

DPM: Im aware the video for Who Knows will be dropping soon, what can we expect to see?

Youngman: Me in the middle of a west London park having a lovely time - with a few special effects.

DPM: I see from your twitter, etc that your doing shows all the time & in so many different places. How do you actually find time to get in the studio?

Youngman: I write most of my songs in the car and I have a studio at home. Whenever I get back from shows, or have a spare moment, that’s where I am.

DPM: Out of interest, how many flights have you been on in the last month?

Youngman: This month, I’ve been a big flier. I’ve been averaging about 2 return flights a week this month, last week Benga and I were in Madrid and Barcelona, this week we’re in Switzerland and Germany, and next week we’re in Denmark.

DPM: Your signed to Shy FX's Digital Soundboy, how did the link up happen?

Youngman: The thing I love about Digital Soundboy is they really understand me and my music. It was always a dream to work with Shy FX and I used to see him on a regular basis on the clubbing scene and the D&B circuit and I’d say to him, ‘I’d love to get in the studio with you, I sing’. It turns out, he loved a track I did with Benga but he didn’t know it was me for a year, and all the while I was talking to him, saying how interested in working with him I was, and it wasn’t until I gave him a demo and he put 2 and 2 together, he called me and said ‘I didn’t know that was you’ and signed me on the phone.

DPM: What's it like to be with a label with so many talented artists/producers?

Youngman: It’s emotional! I do have to pinch myself sometimes when I think about the great artists I’m working alongside.

DPM: You were mentioned in the guardian last week. They compared you to a few artists & I was wondering which you preferred, a 'male Katy B' or a 'modern day Craig David'?

Youngman: They’re mad flattering, I’m a big fan of both of them. I’m not counting my chickens too soon though, I’m just going to keep my head down, make music and see where it takes me.

DPM: How does it feel that someone like the guardian are picking up on what your doing?

Youngman: It’s a little bit surreal to go from such a raw clubbing audience to be recognized by mainstream publications. But I’m thankful for all the support I get from everyone.

DPM: What can we expect for your releases in 2012? I've read a few names on who your working with, any you can confirm?

Youngman: Obviously Benga and Skream. My album is being executive produced by Benga and Shy FX and includes records from Skream, MJ Cole & Sam Frank, Breakage to name a few.

DPM: If there was one thing that you'd like to achieve in 2012, what would it be?

Youngman: I’d like to establish myself as a solo artist, release my album and do plenty of shows.

Melé - Beamer

Radio Rip from Annie Mac. Big tune from the very talented Melé.

Increasingly becoming a bigger fan of Melé by the day, so much is going on in his productions and they all seem to have so many different influences. He has to be one of the only artists making electronic music where I can hear influences from Dipset. Well maybe apart from Araabmuzik, who is actually in Dipset, but yeah. Dipset forever.

Forthcoming on Grizzly.

Excited to see what's in store for Melé's musical output this year. To tie you over before this release, go check out his 'Starlight' EP which came out September of last year.

Below I've embedded a few prime cuts that Melé upoloadeded to his soundcloud this week. I would normally put up my favourite one, but these are so damn good I couldn't choose just one.

Youngman - Who Knows? [Video]

''Who Knows?' is produced by Skream, Youngman AKA Simon Smith's long-time friend and collaborator, alongside Benga and Magnetic Man. Having already been named Zane Lowe's 'Next Hype', MistaJam's 'Jam Hot' and Annie Mac's 'Record of the Week' on Radio 1, the single is shaping up to kick off a fantastic start to 2012 for Youngman, which also includes supporting Example on his UK-wide arena tour.'

Super late posting this, although I did first speak about this tune back in September of last year.

Firmly believe Youngman has a hit on his hands here, massive dance floor centric track powered by a Skream produced backdrop, driven by deep baselines and synths.

This has propelled him onto a few 2012 lists & I've read more than a couple of articles suggesting he is the 'female Katy B'. Perhaps a lazy comparision, but I'm more surprised that he hasn't been compared more to Example.

Listening to this track and looking at the list of people he is working with, I honestly can't see why he couldn't be just as big.

Without a doubt one of my ones to watch for 2012.

On another note, look out for an upcoming interview with Youngman on dpm very soon!

'Who Knows?' is released on Jan 29th by Digital Soundboy.

The duo have been a dpm favourite with the remixes of Zed Bias and the Warner released remix of Mz Bratt. Now they take their signature sound and add it to the excellent vocal of Switch's brilliant 'I Still Love You'.

Drake - Over My Dead Body [Star Slinger Jetlag Edit]

Star Slinger takes on the opening track to Drake's million plus selling second album 'Take Care', injecting the original with added bounce.

I'm addicted to this and the original at the moment. I could listen to the lead vocal on loop all day.

Below I've added another remix from Star Slinger of Rihanna's 'We Found Love', which is a very good take on the original.

This is my current guilty pleasure...

iO and Lo:Tek - Mindgames

First post of 2012, after an extended festive break, comes from a collaborative effort from dpm favourite iO and Super Recordings artist Lo:Tek.

Already getting plays from the likes of Mary Anne Hobbs, this is a great piece of dark future garage.

The first track of a few more in the works to come from this collab.
